Puffco Peak vs Focus V Carta Sport: Which E-Rig Wins in Canada?
This is the comparison we get asked about most across the counter in Edmonton, and it is the one almost nobody writes about properly. The Puffco Peak sits at $299 CAD. The Focus V Carta Sport sits at $325 CAD. Twenty-six dollars apart, both water-filtered countertop e-rigs, both from the two biggest names in the category.
Most comparisons online pit the Carta Sport against the Peak Pro, which is a $580 device. That is not a fair fight and it does not answer the question people actually have. Here is the one that matters.
The short version
The Peak is the simpler, more refined experience. The Carta Sport gives you more control, more battery, and easier cleaning. If you want to press one button and get a perfect dab, buy the Peak. If you like tinkering and hate cleaning reclaim out of an airpath, buy the Carta Sport.
Heating: two different philosophies
Both use a ceramic 3D-style chamber, but they heat differently in a way that matters.
Puffco's 3D chamber heats the walls of the bowl. Focus V's Intelli-Core atomizer heats the walls and the bottom plate. In practice the Carta Sport is slightly more forgiving about where your dab lands in the bowl, and slightly better at finishing a load without leaving a ring behind. The Peak counters with real-time temperature control that holds the bowl steadier through a session, which is why Peak hits tend to taste more consistent from first pull to last.
Neither is objectively better. The Carta Sport wastes less; the Peak is more consistent.
Controls and temperature
The Peak keeps four factory-tuned presets, cycled with a single button:
- Blue — 490°F, flavour-first
- Green — 510°F, balanced
- Red — 530°F, heavy vapour
- White — 590°F, maximum intensity
There is no Bluetooth and no app. That is deliberate. Puffco tuned these four settings and expects you to use them.
The Carta Sport runs five presets from 480°F to 565°F, also cycled with one button (the "V" button), but it adds Bluetooth. Pair it with the Focus V app and you can set exact temperatures, adjust session length, change the LED behaviour, and save profiles. At this price point, app control is genuinely unusual — Puffco makes you jump to the $580 Peak Pro to get it.
If app control matters to you at all, this section alone decides the purchase.
Battery
The Carta Sport wins clearly. Its 2700mAh cell is roughly 35% larger than the Carta 2 it replaced, and Focus V rates it at up to 50 sessions per charge. The Peak lands closer to 30–40 sessions depending on which heat setting you live on.
Both charge over USB-C. Neither does wireless charging — that stays a Peak Pro feature.
For a device that mostly lives on a coffee table, this gap matters less than the spec sheet suggests. For anyone who takes their rig to a friend's place regularly, the Carta Sport buys you real breathing room.
Cleaning — the underrated difference
This is where the Carta Sport pulls ahead in a way spec sheets do not capture.
The Carta Sport introduced the CARTA Connect, a removable silicone airpath. It pops out. You wipe it down or soak it, and you are done. Reclaim management on this device is close to painless.
The Peak's airpath is fixed. Cleaning means cotton swabs, isopropyl, and patience. It is not difficult, but it is a chore you will repeat every couple of weeks, and it is the single most common thing people complain to us about after a few months of ownership.
If you know yourself well enough to admit you will not keep up with maintenance, that alone is an argument for the Carta Sport.
Glass and the aftermarket
Both take aftermarket glass, and both have healthy ecosystems. We stock replacement and upgrade glass for both — Carta glass from Discobox, Magizle, Greenbelt and One Trick Pony, and a deep bench of Peak glass including the Module.
Slight edge to Puffco on sheer volume — more artists make Peak glass than Carta glass, simply because Puffco has been around longer and sold more units. But Carta glass has gotten much easier to find in the last two years, and the Carta Sport takes all existing Carta 2 glass tops, so you are not buying into a dead platform.
Build and feel
The Peak feels like the more premium object. Heavier in the hand, denser, with the joystick carb cap that has become the brand's signature. It looks like a piece of design.
The Carta Sport is lighter, wrapped in textured silicone, and unmistakably built to be carried. Focus V called it "Sport" for a reason — it ships with a padded travel case with a shoulder strap. It looks like gear rather than décor.
Which you prefer is entirely taste. But if the rig is going to live on display, most people pick the Peak.
Which should you buy?
Buy the Puffco Peak if you want the most polished out-of-the-box experience, you like the idea of four settings someone else already dialled in, you care how the device looks sitting out, or you want the widest possible selection of aftermarket glass.
Buy the Focus V Carta Sport if you want app control without paying Peak Pro money, you want the bigger battery, you travel with your rig, or — most importantly — you want an airpath you can actually pull out and clean.
For a first e-rig, we usually point people to the Peak. Fewer decisions, and the four presets are genuinely well chosen. For someone replacing a rig they have already lived with, we usually point to the Carta Sport, because by then they know exactly how much they hate cleaning and how often they run out of battery.
Buying either in Edmonton or across Canada
Drip Glass is an authorized retailer for both brands, which matters more than it sounds. Warranty claims on grey-market units go nowhere, and the concentrate hardware space has a real counterfeit problem — particularly with atomizers and chambers.
